WordPress comes with some standard themes that although they are modern and responsive (It adapts depending on the size of the screen you’re using – phone, computer, tablet, etc) they don’t have many features and the design is not very customized. The good news is that many third-party developers have created and published many themes to be used on WordPress, most of them for free. So how to install a WordPress theme?

Installing a theme from WordPress repository

WordPress has a repository of themes where developers published and update their themes. This way you can just select it from the gallery, preview and install it on your website in a few clicks.

To find a new template, login to your WordPress dashboard and go to “Appearance > Themes

The following page will show you the standard WordPress themes available to use. To add a new one from the WordPress repository, go to “Add New”.

That’s the WordPress repository where you’ll be able to find and install templates in an easy way. You can filter for “Popular“, “Featured“, “Latest” and “Favorites” or use the search box to look for a specific theme for your business.

For example, if you have a travel agency or a travel blog and is looking for a template related to it, so just put something like “travel” in the search box and install a theme you like. You can install as many themes as you want.

To install a theme, pass the cursor on it and select “Install” and then “Activate“.

The website should be using the new template now and you are free to customize it as you like.

Installing a template from a zip file

Another option WordPress offers is to use a theme from a third-party and upload it directly to your website. You can find and download wonderful themes here.

After choosing and downloading the template you’d like to use, go to “Appearance > Themes” and select the “Upload Theme” button on the top of the screen.

After uploading the .zip file, just activate and start using your new template.
